Enterprise Sales Engineer
An Enterprise Sales Engineer, called Solutions Engineer or Sales Engineer at some companies, is the engineer who proves, before the contract is signed, that the product solves the customer's problem. You sit in the sales organization and you pair with an Account Executive: they own the deal, you own the technical case. The role is old in enterprise software. AI companies ask for engineering experience because the demo and the validation now require code.
What the work is
- You meet the customer's technical organization and map their requirements. Early in the cycle you sit with their engineers and architects, work out what they need and what their environment looks like, and screen for technical fit before anything else happens.
- You build the demo on their terms. You construct it with the customer's data and scenarios. For AI products the demo is effectively a prototype, so you write code to build it.
- You design and run the proof of concept. You agree on success criteria with the customer, run the evaluation over several weeks, and let the result decide.
- You own the technical questions. RFPs, security questionnaires, architecture and integration design. One Sales Engineer at a foreign software company in Korea describes the job as more than half customer support, and the rest constant product study.
- You hand off when the deal closes. Implementation and operations go to another team, and what you heard in the field goes to the product team.
How it differs from a quota-carrying sales role
- The ownership is different. A quota-carrying seller owns the deal and the revenue. A Sales Engineer owns the technical case. The Account Executive owns the close. Part of your compensation moves with team performance, but winning the deal is not your responsibility.
- The output is different. A seller produces proposals and pricing. A Sales Engineer produces a working demo and a validated result.
- The amount of code is different. Sellers do not write code. Sales Engineers write demo and proof-of-concept code, and AI companies frequently list Python as required. You do not write the production code that ships in the product.
How it differs from nearby roles
- Solutions Engineer: usually just a different name. The same work is called Sales Engineer, Solutions Engineer, or Solution Consultant depending on the company. Foreign companies hiring in Korea mostly post it as Solutions Engineer.
- Forward Deployed Engineer: different point in the cycle, different code. A Sales Engineer builds the demo and the proof of concept before the contract. A Forward Deployed Engineer arrives after it and writes production code until the product runs in the customer's environment.
- Account Executive: different ownership. An Account Executive owns everything from prospecting to signature and carries the number. A Sales Engineer owns the technical validation with the customer's technical evaluators.
What companies look for
People arrive from backend and full-stack engineering, solutions architecture, and technical consulting. No degree requirement. Korea-based roles generally require Korean and English. Lay dozens of public Sales Engineer postings on top of each other and three things are always there.
- Building and running demos and proofs of concept yourself. Nearly every posting lists this as core.
- Framing the technology against the customer's problem and leading the technical evaluation. Presales, solutions engineering, and solutions architecture backgrounds all count.
- Enough fluency to read and write code. AI companies list Python as required. Data and infrastructure companies weight architecture knowledge more heavily.
FAQ
Is this a sales job or an engineering job? It is an engineer inside the sales organization. Closing belongs to the Account Executive. You prove the product works in the customer's environment. That said, part of your compensation usually moves with team performance, so it is not a role detached from sales.
Do you write code? Demo and proof-of-concept code, yes. Production code that ships in the product, no. For AI products the demo is effectively a prototype, which is why so many companies list Python as required.
How does compensation work? Base plus variable is the norm. The split and the measures differ enough by company that a single answer would be misleading.
Are companies hiring for this in Korea? Yes. Global software and AI companies operating in Korea hire for it to cover Korean customers, and the posting is usually titled Solutions Engineer. Korean startups sometimes use Sales Engineer.
